Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM)

Convenient, accurate 24-hour blood pressure assessment at your local pharmacy.
Why choose ABPM?

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM)

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) offers a comprehensive view of blood pressure throughout a full day and night. Unlike single measurements in clinic, ABPM captures fluctuations during sleep, exercise and routine activities, improving diagnostic accuracy. Our trained pharmacy team fits the compact monitor, explains how to record a diary of activities and symptoms, and ensures patient comfort. After 24 hours the device is returned and data analysed to produce a clear report highlighting average daytime and nighttime pressures, peaks, and patterns. This objective information supports tailored treatment decisions, medication reviews and referrals when necessary.

How ABPM works

What to Expect from ABPM

The ABPM process is straightforward and patient-friendly. A small monitor is connected to a cuff worn on the upper arm and programmed to take measurements at regular intervals throughout the day and night, typically every 15–30 minutes during waking hours and less frequently during sleep. Patients are asked to continue normal activities but to keep the arm still during readings and to record sleep and notable events in a simple diary. Once the 24-hour period is complete, the monitor is returned and the collected data is analysed to produce mean daytime and nighttime figures, variability measures, and a concise report that supports diagnosis and clinical decision-making.

Key Points

ABPM provides diagnostic clarity where clinic readings may be misleading. By capturing readings across typical daily routines and sleep, ABPM can reveal elevated readings that only appear in clinical settings (white-coat) or raised values that clinic checks miss (masked hypertension). The data is essential for assessing whether current antihypertensive treatment is effective or needs adjusting, and it supports decisions about starting therapy. Reports include averages, variability measures and nocturnal dipping patterns, offering clinicians a richer evidence base than single-time clinic measurements. This improves targeting of treatments and reduces unnecessary medication changes.

Results and Follow-up

After the monitoring period we download the recorded data and generate a concise, easy-to-understand report. The pharmacist will review average daytime and nighttime pressures, note any abnormal patterns, and discuss findings with you. If needed, we provide written results for your GP and recommendations for follow-up, medication review or lifestyle advice. Our aim is to ensure you receive clear guidance and that any necessary treatment changes are based on accurate, real-life measurements rather than single clinic readings.

Fitting and diary

Before and During Monitoring

During the fitting appointment we check your arm size, explain how the monitor works and give advice on keeping the activity diary. You should try to follow your normal routine but avoid heavy lifting during readings. The diary helps correlate symptoms with readings and improves interpretation. If you experience any problems while wearing the monitor, contact the pharmacy for advice. On return, data is reviewed and interpreted using standard clinical thresholds. The whole pathway is designed to be efficient, safe and supportive, helping you and your clinician make informed decisions about blood pressure management.

Understanding your report

Report Details

The ABPM report includes average daytime and nighttime readings, variability analysis, and graphs showing trends across the monitoring period. This visual and numerical summary aids clinicians in diagnosing hypertension subtypes and assessing cardiovascular risk. Based on the findings, pharmacists can recommend lifestyle measures, medication review or prompt GP follow-up. The report is concise and formatted for easy inclusion in medical records, supporting continuity of care and informed shared decision-making between patient and clinician.
